Frequently Asked Questions

Is ownCloud.online the same as ownCloud On-Premises?

No. ‘On-Premises’ means that you install and run the software yourself on your own servers. ownCloud.online, on the other hand, is a hosted service: we run the platform for you, and you access it via a browser, desktop client or app. Furthermore, ownCloud.online is not based on the official product from ownCloud GmbH, but on an independent further development by BW-Tech. The range of features and version status may therefore differ from the official ownCloud. However, you do not need to choose one option over the other to receive support: we support both customers on ownCloud.online and companies that run ownCloud On-Premises themselves.

Can I host ownCloud.online myself?

Yes. ownCloud.online is open-source software and can, in principle, be run on your own server. The source code for ownCloud.online is also publicly available on GitHub. However, to run it yourself, you will need your own hardware or a rented server, as well as the expertise to handle installation, security, backups and regular updates. You don’t have to go it alone: BW-Tech offers support and assistance with all aspects of running ownCloud On-Premises, from set-up to ongoing maintenance. If you’d rather not deal with the operational side at all, ownCloud.online provides you with a ready-to-use, maintained cloud service from our data centre in Frankfurt am Main.

Who operates ownCloud.online?

ownCloud.online is operated and further developed by BW-Tech GmbH, Albert-Bassermann-Straße 31, 68782 Brühl. The platform is based on the open-source ownCloud software, which we independently develop further under the name ownCloud.online and enhance with our own features. We use the name ownCloud under licence from Kiteworks. However, the development and operation of ownCloud.online are carried out entirely independently of ownCloud GmbH.

Is ownCloud.online self-hosted?

Yes. ownCloud.online runs entirely on its own infrastructure: the servers are located in BW-Tech GmbH’s own data centre in Frankfurt am Main. Your data does not leave Germany and is subject to the provisions of the GDPR. We do not use large public cloud providers, but have full control over hardware, software and updates. We do not pass your data on to third parties.

What's the difference to other public cloud providers?

Unlike Dropbox, OneDrive etc. ownCloud.online is not a public cloud but a private cloud and focuses on data privacy and security. Providing a real protection to your data in combination with the advantages of a cloud is the core concept of ownCloud.online. It is designed to trust – without any limitations.

With a hosted cloud solution I still don't know where my files are stored!

ownCloud.online is hosted strictly in Germany. Our server farms are protected by the most modern physical and digital protection and prevention systems. Covered by strict German data privacy laws we guarantee the security of your files. Detailed information about our server farms can be provided at any time.

What is an ownCloud.online User?

A user is any person or role on your team with a unique email address. Each team member should have his or her own user license. Users can link their ownCloud.online accounts to as many of their devices as they’d like (PCs, phones, tablets, etc.) at no additional charge. To make your data available to external persons you can create guest accounts at no additional charge. Guest users have some limitations to features.

How much space does my team get?

Starting with 5 users your team has a cloud storage of 1TB (1024GB (GigaByte)). With every additional user your storage is extended by 200GB. For customized solutions please contact support@owncloudonline.com.

What is an "ownCloud.online instance"?

An ownCloud.online instance is a dedicated installation with dedicated storage and user space. It is only accessible by you. Other ownCloud.online users have their own dedicated workspace so no cross-cloud access is possible. Some other public cloud providers do aggregate data from different customers to save space which is a big threat to data security and privacy.
